Kaktovik/Barter Island
Kaktovik is an Inupiat village located on Barter Island, 90 miles west of the Canadian border and 278 miles southeast of Barrow. The village was much-visited by whaling crews at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. After World War II a DEW line site was constructed on the island. The discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay, 120 miles to the west, led to Kaktovik's rapid modernization and increased prosperity.
